Acton
Leathertown on the escarpment
Acton is the town I grew up in, so I will admit up front that I am biased. It is the quieter heart of Halton Hills, settled where the Niagara Escarpment begins to rise, and it has a warmth that is hard to describe until you have spent a Saturday morning on Main Street.
The leather industry gave Acton its Leathertown nickname, and the town still carries that hard-working, close-knit character today. The Bruce Trail brushes the edge of town, the escarpment gives it hills and long views, and neighbours genuinely look out for each other.
If you are looking for a friendly, grounded community where people know your name, this is a wonderful place to start, in any season of life.
Acton, Ontario
Part of Halton Hills, and one of the communities I know best.
Inside Acton
The pockets that give it its character.
Every community is really a handful of smaller places, each with its own feel. Here is the lay of the land, the way I'd describe it to a friend.
Downtown Acton along Main Street
The old heart of town is a real main street, not a strip mall. Heritage brick and limestone storefronts, a coffee shop or two, and the kind of walk where you bump into someone you know. Living here puts the arena, the library and the bakery a short stroll from your door.
The streets climbing toward the escarpment
Some of Acton's most characterful pockets are the older residential streets that step up the escarpment. Mature trees, covered front porches and long views from the higher lanes give these streets a settled, established feel.
The family neighbourhoods around the schools
Many families land in Acton's newer crescents, close to schools, parks and the recreation complex. Wide streets, young families, and swimming lessons and hockey on the schedule a short drive away.
The rural edge just outside town
Right at Acton's doorstep the pavement gives way to farm lanes and escarpment forest. Acreage homes and country lots sit close enough to town for the school run, and far enough for genuine peace and quiet.
