Why Acton: seven things locals love about Leathertown

From the Niagara Escarpment to the leather-heritage streetscape, here is what makes Acton, Ontario such an easy place to call home.

I grew up in Acton, so it is hard for me to be objective about this town. I will say that openly. But after more than 13 years working in real estate across Halton Hills and beyond, I still get a small thrill every time I turn onto the main street and see the heritage buildings up against that escarpment sky. Here are seven things people who live here tend to love most.

  1. 1 The escarpment elevation. Acton sits roughly 350 metres up on the Niagara Escarpment, which means hills, clean air and long views that give the town its character.
  2. 2 The Bruce Trail on your doorstep. Canada's oldest and longest marked hiking trail runs along the escarpment with access points right around Acton. For walkers, it is a gift that keeps giving in every season.
  3. 3 Leathertown pride. The Beardmore tannery made Acton the leather capital of the British Empire, and the Olde Hide House carried the story on into modern times. Locals still tell the story with real affection.
  4. 4 A true small-town pace. People wave on the trail, shopkeepers know your name, and the community turns out for parades, fairs and the arena.
  5. 5 Heritage that is lived in. Acton's brick and limestone buildings are not museum pieces, they are the working streetscape of the town.
  6. 6 Highway 7 and 25 access. You feel a world away, yet Guelph and the GTA are easy to reach when you need them.
  7. 7 Room for every chapter. Starter homes, family houses, countryside acreages and comfortable downsizes all exist within a short drive of each other, which is exactly why I love helping people find their spot here.

If you are considering a move to Acton, come walk the main street first. Then call me, and we will figure out which corner of town suits the life you are picturing.
